How We Review Betting Sites
Last updated 2 July 2026
Every BetMzansi bookmaker rating comes from hands-on testing, not a press release. This page explains exactly how we review and score South African betting sites, so you can see the work behind the rating and judge for yourself whether you agree with it.
We open a real account
Before we publish a review, we register a real account, complete FICA, make a deposit, place bets and request a withdrawal. That means our notes on sign-up friction, deposit methods, payout speed, app quality and customer support come from genuine first-hand experience - not from copying the operator's own marketing. Where it helps, we include our own screenshots of the site taken during testing.
What we score, and how much it counts
We score every site out of five, weighted toward what matters most to South African punters:
- Safety & licensing (highest weight) - is the operator licensed by a South African provincial gambling board? We only feature licensed sites.
- Payouts - how fast and how smoothly withdrawals actually clear in our own testing.
- Value of bonuses - the real value of a welcome offer after wagering requirements, not the headline number.
- Markets & products - sport depth, lucky numbers, Aviator and casino, live betting, and pools like Soccer 13.
- Payments - deposit options South Africans use (OTT vouchers, EFT, card, cash), minimums and fees.
- Mobile experience - app and data-light site quality on real, mid-range SA phones.
- Support - how quickly and helpfully customer service responds.
How a rating comes together (example)
A site with a strong licence, reliable payouts and a great app but only an average bonus might score 4.5/5 - the bonus does not sink it because payouts and safety weigh more heavily. A site with a huge advertised bonus but slow, painful withdrawals will score lower, because getting your money out matters more than a big sign-up headline. We would rather send you to a site that pays reliably than one that markets loudly.
What we cannot test
We test what a normal punter experiences. We do not have inside access to an operator's systems, and we cannot promise your individual experience will match ours - payout times, for example, vary with your bank and the day of the week. We tell you what we found and flag where results may differ.
How often we re-check
Bookmakers change bonuses, apps and payout times often, so we re-test our reviews regularly and update the "Updated" date on each page when we do. If you spot something out of date, please tell us and we will re-check it.
Our independence
BetMzansi may earn a commission when you sign up through our links, but this never affects our ratings or rankings, and ratings are never for sale. A commercial relationship does not change what we write. Read more on our about page.
